How to Change Fuel Injector O-Rings on 1988 Jeep Cherokee

The fuel injection system on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee is controlled by an Electronic Control Unit that constantly adjusts the air-fuel mixture sent to the injectors. The fuel pump provides pressure to drive the fuel through the system. O-rings are located in the quick-connect fuel line fittings. Every time the fittings are disconnected, the o-rings must be replaced. O-rings are sold in kits that include plugs to help properly roll the rings in place.

Tools Used: O-ring replacement kit

Change Fuel Injector O-Rings

Relieve fuel pressure in the fuel tank by removing the filler cap.

Follow the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the engine. There are two possible locations for the fuel line fittings, depending on the Cherokee model: underneath the vehicle along the left side frame rail and inside the quick connect fuel line fittings, or under the hood close to the fuel rail inlet port near the firewall on the driver side. In the later case, the other o-ring will connect the fuel return line and fuel return hose on the driver's side closer to the front of the engine.

Pinch the retainer tabs together and pull the two sides of the fitting apart. The quick connect fuel line fittings consist of two o-rings, a spacer and retainer. Discard the o-rings, retainers and spacer each time you disconnect this fitting.

Push the plug in the replacement kit into the quick connect fitting until it clicks. All of the parts are held on this plug. Pull the plug out of the fitting and discard.

Push the fuel line into the quick connect fitting until it clicks. Pull back firmly on the connection to ensure it is properly connected and does not disconnect. Replace the fuel tank filler cap.

Tips & Warnings

Gasoline is extremely flammable. Keep all flame sources away from the vehicle while performing this repair.
