How to Replace the Motor Mounts on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier

A damaged or worn engine mount can allow the engine to vibrate beyond a reasonable amount, causing damage to engine components. Engine mounts should be replaced at the first sign of failure. The mounts on a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier can be changed by most novice mechanics with a few common tools as this is a straightforward task that can be completed in under an hour once the engine weight is removed from the two mounts.


STEP 1 - Raise the front of the vehicle with an automobile jack and secure it on jack stands. .

STEP 2 - Raise the engine. Place a block of wood on top of the jack and place it under the oil pan. Raise the jack slightly. Check the engine to see if it has raised slightly from the engine mounts. The engine should only be raised enough to take the tension off of the two engine mounts.

STEP 3 - Unscrew the mounting bolts holding the upper engine mount bracket to the frame with a ratchet wrench.

STEP 4 - Remove the mount-to-block mounting bolts from the engine with the ratchet wrench then remove the mount.

STEP 5 - Place the upper engine mount in position and install the mount-to-block mounting bolts to the engine with the ratchet wrench. Spread thread locker onto the threads of the mounting bolts before installing them.

STEP 6 - Install the mounting bolts holding the upper engine mount bracket to the frame with the ratchet wrench. Spread thread locker onto the threads of the mounting bolts before installing them.

STEP 7 - Unscrew the two mounting bolts holding the lower engine shock mount in place with a ratchet wrench. The mount, shaped like a dog bone, is located on the lower portion of the engine block.

STEP 8 - Remove the lower engine shock mount.

STEP 9 - Put the lower engine shock mount in place and install the two mounting bolts with the ratchet wrench. Spread thread locker onto the threads of the mounting bolts before installing them.

STEP 10 - Lower the jack to lower the engine back onto the engine mounts.

STEP 11 - Lower the vehicle with the jack and remove the jack stands.
